During the 1970s, Robert King, Herman Wallace and Albert Woodfox formed a Black Panther Party chapter in Angola Penitentiary in Louisiana. Known as the Angola 3, they protested against continued segregation, corruption and abuses facing the largely black prison population within Angola. Between them King, Wallace and Woodfox have spent more than 100 years in solitary confinement in Angola's maximum security Closed Cell Restricted (CCR) block in cells 2 x 3 metres for up to 23 hours a day.
Robert King is the only freed member of the Angola 3. He was exonerated in 2001 after being wrongfully convicted of a crime he did not commit after 31 years - 29 years in solitary confinement. Robert continues to fight for justice and freedom for Albert Woodfox and Herman Wallace who have now spent more than 40 years in Angola prison, Louisiana, in solitary confinement for a murder of an Angola prison guard by an all white jury, based on no DNA evidence and on the testimony of a blind eye witness. They have always proclaimed their innocence, saying that they were framed and targeted by the prison authorities for their activism. The case of the Angola 3 has been cited as a gross miscarriage of justice and Amnesty International calls for their immediate release from solitary confinement which violates the US Constitution and international human rights treaties.

Since his release Robert has traveled the world campaigning for the freedom of his 2 comrades and against abuses in the justice system. The acclaimed documentary In the Land of the Free and Robert’s autobiography From the Bottom of the Heap expose this gross miscarriage of justice.
