Morcheeba

As one of the architects of trip-hop, Morcheeba have received precious little credit for selling five million albums. Taste merchants may have sneered, but the US hip-hop scene had no prblem embracing them, while a generation of clubbers came down gently to theoir soothing beats.

Nevertheless, Morcheeba have broken with their past. Encouraged by the departure of the vocalist Skye Edwards and the recruitment of the former Noonday Underground singer Daisy Martey and her psych-folk tones, the Godfrey brothers have explored fresh avenues. Stripped of programmed beats and trip-pop styling, The Antidote has an organic feel that blends 1960s pop and psychedelic rock with contemporary sonic effects.

The single Wonders Never Cease provides a bridge to their past, Lighten Up is sublime pop, and Ten Men and A Military Coup arrive like Leige and Lief-era fairport Convention remixed. The title track is the most ambitious trip of all, climaxing with a deluge of brass and woodwind. There is more cutting edge lyric on show, too, a waspishness to be found in the relationship cul-de-sac of Living Hell and acerbic tango of Everybody Loves A Loser. Taken as a whole, Morcheeba's fifth album is the antidote to chill-out
