The end of most seafood by 2048? That’s the prediction made by scientists if the current trend of fishing continues. But why should we care?

In short, because the world is connected through ecosystems and taking links out of the chain leads us into unknown waters, so to speak. The number of ways in which our sea life is threatened seems as vast as the number of species affected by their consequences. Major concerns include illegal fishing, overfishing, fish discard and unregulated waters to name a few.

Effective eco-systems rely on the balanced interaction of organisms and animals to maintain healthy populations. We are currently witnessing major disruptions to this balance and even the best scientific minds cannot accurately predict the scale of its consequences in the future. One thing is for sure, the human population is growing and with more mouths to feed, something must be done.

It’s not all doom and gloom. Populations can slowly rise again with effectively enforced government legislation. An example of this is in New England (north-eastern corner of the United States) where they’ve enjoyed a rise in groundfish (Atlantic cod, haddock, flounders, hake, Pollock) in recent years thanks to annual catch limits implemented by a revised law they call Amendment 16.

Activism and government legislation are absolutely fundamental in making sure we don’t lose our marine life forever. There are numerous campaigns and organisations tackling several areas of concern and they are slowly making essential progress to sustainable fishing.

We live in a connected world. Connect, raise awareness and show you give a damn with this ‘Plenty More Fish’ tee.

The Multi Award winning chef Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall has raised vast awareness of the issue of sustainable fishing recently with Hugh's Fish Fight.
